PHIL NEVILLE aims to prove Everton wrong by continuing his career at the top level next season.
The ex-England defender was told he could not be guaranteed regular first-team football if he opted to extend his eight-year stay at Goodison Park.Club skipper Neville, 36, yesterday announced he will leave when his current deal expires in the summer rather than open talks on a possible extension.
However the former Manchester United star insists he is not ready to call time on his 19-year playing career just yet.
Neville will be part of Stuart Pearce’s backroom team with the England Under-21s at the Euro finals this summer — but hopes to return for pre-season with a new club.
He said: “I want to continue to play at the top level as long as I can and will be weighing up my options before making a decision on my next move.
“I’ll now be doing everything I can to help Everton finish as high up the league table as possible.”
Neville joined Everton from United for £3.5million in 2005 and has gone on to make 303 outings in all competitions, scoring eight goals.
He was still a big part of David Moyes’ team at the start of the season, making 25 appearances — but recently he has fallen out of favour.
Neville’s last start was the shock FA Cup quarter-final KO by Wigan last month when his misjudged pass presented Callum McManaman with the Latics’ second goal.
The veteran realised his Goodison opportunities were going to be limited and the mutual decision was taken to go their separate ways this coming summer.
But he is not ready to hang up his boots and he may be willing to drop down to the Championship to prolong his career — while a player-coach role could also appeal.
Neville said: “It’s been an honour to play for and captain Everton.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on Merseyside and will leave with immense pride.
“I would like to thank the manager David Moyes, chairman Bill Kenwright, all of the staff and the players at Everton for their continued support during my time at the club.
“I’d also like to pay a special thanks to the fans, who have been amazing over the past eight years and Everton will always have a place in my heart.”
