MARIO GOTZE missed a hat-trick of clear-cut chances as German efficiency went right out of the window last night.
Dortmund, who qualified ahead of Real Madrid from the group stages, should be in the driving seat but go into Tuesday’s second leg all square. The Spanish side had never lost at home in European competition — although that record looked in peril at times.
Jurgen Klopp’s visitors had the ball in the net but Kevin Grosskreutz’s effort was ruled out as Robert Lewandowski was flagged offside.
And Lewandowski was guilty of fluffing a golden opportunity himself when his poor shot was deflected wide by Jeremy Toulalan.
Before that Malaga had a great early chance but Javier Saviola greedily chose to shoot and could only find the side-netting instead of squaring the ball to the lively Isco.
Dortmund responded with Gotze twice losing out to keeper Willy Caballero in one-on-one situations.
The Germans had the goal at their mercy again on the hour but Gotze still could not find the target.
And the game ended with yet more wasteful Dortmund finishing as Julian Schieber blazed wide.
