DAVIDE SANTON is on a mission to save Newcastle’s season — after apologising for his Euro blunder.
The full-back’s backpass howler gifted Benfica their second goal in Toon’s 3-1 Europa League first-leg loss on Thursday.Santon was furious with himself and is now keen to make amends at home to Fulham tomorrow.
The Italian, 22, said: “I am angry with myself. I think I had a good game but that pass was a disaster.
“I said sorry to the players because it was my fault.
“Now I have to forget my mistake and think about Sunday.
“We need to make sure we save our season and stay in the Premier League.”
Boss Alan Pardew has called the next seven days the biggest of his time at Toon.
They host Benfica on Thursday in their quarter-final second leg then tackle rivals Sunderland next Sunday.
Pards said: “Momentum will be key for the whole of next week. It is important we get ourselves in a really positive place.
“It is a big week in terms of the season — one of the biggest weeks in my period here.
“I am confident we have the ability in the squad to get ourselves into a position where we are a Premier League side next season.”
