ONE OVER BAR ... Adebayor misses the target in humiliating fashion as Tottenham crash out

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR last night shrugged off his ‘Basel Fawlty’ penalty gaffe — insisting: I was tired.

Tottenham lost their Europa League quarter-final shootout away to Swiss outfit FC Basel on Thursday after Adebayor failed to score with a spot-kick John Cleese would have been proud of.
The Togolese striker looked like the Fawlty Towers star as he took a ridiculous ‘silly walk’ run-up before blazing the ball over the crossbar.
It helped condemn Spurs — who battled through extra-time with 10 men after Jan Vertonghen was sent off — to a 4-1 defeat in the shootout after the teams had been locked at 4-4 on aggregate.
Adebayor said: “It was a tough one. You run around for 120 minutes.
“You give everything you have in your stomach and you are tired and then, at the end of the day, you have to take a penalty.
“You play with 10 men for the last 30 minutes and on top of that you have to take a penalty, and the pressure is there when you take the ball... you know.
“It’s not the reason why we missed — we had to score, but it’s not easy.”
Adebayor’s penalty has become the butt of jokes on the internet.
The striker bizarrely ran on the spot for a couple of seconds before running up to hit the ball.
But he said: “I have taken penalties for Arsenal, I have taken penalties for Real Madrid so it’s a gamble. You miss or you score.
