Rodgers: O’Neill axing so ‘shocking’

Martin O'Neill

BRENDAN RODGERS last night spoke of his utter shock at Martin O’Neill’s sacking.

Sunderland parted company with O’Neill on Saturday night with the threat of relegation hanging over them.
Liverpool boss Rodgers said: “It’s a sad day when someone like him loses his job. I was shocked when I heard the news.
“Whenever someone of the status of Martin loses his job then we all have to be on the back foot.”
Rodgers added: “Some clubs need to be careful and know where they are at.”
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert spent five years working with O’Neill at Celtic.
He said: “Nobody is safe if someone of the calibre of Martin O’Neill can go.”
And former England skipper and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer added: “Sunderland have taken a big gamble by changing their manager at this stage.”
