Hamilton No1 Merc vow

LEWIS HAMILTON looks like he will be in the driving seat for the world championship — next year.

That is the message coming from his team Mercedes, who have revealed they are about to switch more than half their workforce on to their 2014 Formula One car.
F1 teams are facing massive rule changes next season as the current V8 engines are replaced by 1.6 litre V6 turbos, which in turn will prompt a fundamental re-think on chassis design and aerodynamics.
And though Merc insist they will not abandon this year’s championship challenge, they look set to have more than one eye on the future.
Team chief Toto Wolff said: “We’re already working on 2014 and we’ll gradually raise the percentage of people working on next year’s car.
“I would say that in May we will reach a point where more than 50 per cent will work on the 2014 car.”
Wolff believes most teams will gradually follow Merc’s example.
He said: “There is no doubt that at a point in the summer everybody will switch their main resources to the 2014 car as this is a very complex machine.
“It all depends where you are in the standings. Those fighting for the title will of course concentrate longer on this year’s car.”
Wolff was adamant Mercedes’ decision did not mean they are waving the white flag already this season.
He said: “I want to be among the four top teams in the constructors’ championship and have a driver among the top four as well.”BIG PUSH ... Mercedes will soon turn their attention to 2014

Thank chew and goodnigh

Luis Suarez

LUIS SUAREZ is ready to quit Liverpool.

The controversial striker has been left “morally destroyed” by yesterday’s 10-match ban for biting Chelsea star Branislav Ivanovic.
Suarez confessed: “I am unhappy because this could break my dream of being recognised as the best forward in England this year.”
The FA’s punishment has shattered his hopes of finishing Premier League top scorer and means Suarez will miss the rest of this season plus the first SIX matches of 2013-14.
Family members in Uruguay claimed Suarez was feeling “morally destroyed” over the ban.
Liverpool, who have until noon tomorrow to appeal, said they were “shocked and disappointed” at the length of the suspension.
Club officials fear Suarez could want out if he feels he has been the victim of a witch-hunt.
Ladbrokes offer just 6-4 on him not playing for the Reds again.
Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said: “The club and player are both shocked and disappointed at the severity of today’s decision.”
Despite his previous poor disciplinary record, Suarez claimed he should have copped just a three-game ban for violent conduct.
The player’s agent, Pere Guardiola, is set to meet Liverpool officials next week for talks which could end with a move abroad.
Suarez refused to comment on the possibility of leaving Anfield but did say: “I’m not thinking about my future, but my image.
“I am not a violent player. What happened with Ivanovic was instinctive and I am very sorry.”
Suarez has scored 23 league goals this season, one behind Robin van Persie.
But he received an eight-game ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra in 2011 and served a seven-match suspension for biting an opponent while at Ajax in 2010.
Chelsea interim boss Rafa Benitez refused to comment on the length of Suarez’s ban but said: “Watching the video, I think everyone can see that Luis was wrong. But we have to carry on and move forward.”

Success with Chelsea is what counts

Eden Hazard has been in sparkling form this season

EDEN HAZARD insists that winning the Europa League means more to him than scooping a PFA award.

While Hazard, 22, would be delighted to walk away with the Player of the Year or Young Player of the Year gong, success with Chelsea is the only thing on his mind.
The Blues star said: “In France I was voted the best player by other players, which was a big honour.
“It is good for me, but it is not so important. It is very nice to be nominated, but I am just happy to play well this season.
“Maybe we can win in the Europa League, which would be more important.
“It is about the team, not individual personal performances. Players want to win trophies and so the Europa League would be better.

Top 10 longest Premier League bans

LUIS SUAREZ will miss Liverpool's next 10 MATCHES for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

But where does the Uruguayan's mega ban rank in the list of all-time Premier League suspensions?
SunSport dipped into the archives to find out.

10. Joey Barton — 6 matches

BAD BOY ... Joey Barton launched a cowardly attack on team-mate Ousmane Dabo
BAD BOY ... Joey Barton launched a cowardly attack on team-mate Ousmane Dabo
THE bad-boy of the modern English game effectively ended his Manchester City career by attacking team-mate Ousmane Dabo.
The Frenchman was left unconscious with head injuries that included a suspected detached retina, while Barton was banned for six months and given a four-month suspended prison sentence for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

9. David Batty — 6 matches

David Batty
DON'T PUSH IT ... David Batty was one of many players to suffer the black mist and shove a ref
BATTY was another player to receive a ban for pushing a referee — just four months before Paolo Di Canio’s identical misdemeanour.
Playing for Newcastle at the time, Batty shoved David Elleray when he was shown a red card against Blackburn.

8. Luis Suarez — 8 matches

Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra
ANFIELD ANTICS ... Luis Suarez was found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra
THE first of two appearances in this list, Suarez was slapped with an eight-match suspension for racially abusing Patrice Evra.
The Uruguayan was found guilty of using the word ‘negro’ five times in his exchange with the Manchester United defender.

7. Ben Thatcher — 8 matches

THE moment Thatcher will forever be remembered for is his sickening elbow on Portsmouth’s Pedro Mendes.
The Manchester City bruiser left Mendes unconscious and needing oxygen after his brutal elbow to the face.
Mendes remained in hospital overnight and Thatcher was banned for eight matches, with a further 15 games suspended.

6. David Prutton — 10 matches

NO WAY THROUGH ... David Prutton was prepared to force his way past Alan Wiley
THE Southampton midfielder did not react well to being shown a second yellow for a studs-up tackle on Arsenal’s Robert Pires.
Prutton attempted to reach the assistant referee but shoved Alan Wiley in the process and was banned for 10 games.

5. Luis Suarez —10 matches

GNASH OF THE DAY ... Luis Suarez bites Chelsea ace Branislav Ivanovic
GNASH OF THE DAY ... Luis Suarez bites Chelsea ace Branislav Ivanovic
THE controversial Liverpool ace earned the nickname ‘Chewy’ Suarez after sinking his teeth into Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.
Officials failed to see the incident during the Prem clash at Anfield — but the Uruguayan felt the long arm of the law as the FA hit him with a mega retrospective suspension.

4. Paolo Di Canio — 11 matches

THE current Sunderland boss showed the volatile side of his character with an insolent push on ref Paul Alcock after being sent off.
The whistler's comical tumble to the ground was mimicked in goal celebrations afterwards — but the FA failed to see the funny side by slapping the Italian with a lengthy ban.

3. Joey Barton — 12 matches

IN the list for a second time, Barton brought more shame on himself with this wild reaction in QPR's final-day visit to Manchester City.
With the R's needing a win on the final day of the season at the champions elect, brainless Barton lost it by elbowing Carlos Tevez, kicking Sergio Aguero and trying to headbutt Vincent Kompany before being given his marching orders.

2. Vinnie Jones — six months (suspended)

Vinnie Jones
THE HARD WAY ... Vinnie Jones didn't realise lending his support to dangerous tackles was a bad idea
THE hardest man in football was forced to miss six months (suspended for three years) in 1992 for a voiceover on a video celebrating dangerous tackles.
Then Wimbledon chairman Sam Hammam branded Jones a ‘mosquito brain’ for taking part in the video, titled Soccer’s Hard Men, which provided advice for budding ‘hard men’.

1. Eric Cantona — nine months

KING ERIC threw away the best part of a season for a heinous kung-fu kick on a Crystal Palace supporter.
Taking offence to a barrage of abuse from the fan in the Selhurst Park crowd, Manchester United ace Cantona shocked the world of football with his attack and paid big time.

Haye ready to take on Tyson

DAVID HAYE wants to shut up talkative Tyson Fury in a heavyweight showdown this year.

Former world champ Haye, 32, has been the target of fierce abuse from Fury, who insists he will punch him into permanent retirement.
Now manager Adam Booth admits the Hayemaker would love the chance to silence Fury and end his 21-fight unbeaten record.
Booth said: “David against Fury is the most natural heavyweight fight out there.
"It is the most logical high-profile fight in Great Britain, if not the world, right now.
“Both boxers are great entertainers. Fury is doing a great job inside and outside the ring and David is a former two-weight world champion.
"His celebrity status has never been higher and importantly both have a top-10 world ranking.
“It would be a huge event anywhere in the country. It wouldn’t matter if it was London or at a Manchester football stadium —it would be massive.
“I am waiting to make contact with Fury’s promoter to see if the interest expressed in some of his comments are genuine or just hot air from a young fighter.”
Haye is due to make his comeback at the Manchester Arena at the end of June after a year out of the ring since knocking out Dereck Chisora.
He is ready to name an opponent next week and if he is successful wants to negotiate an autumn bout against Fury.
Booth added: “We are ready to reveal David’s next opponent very soon and contracts are being finalised but anything can happen in boxing.
“I’ve read Fury wants the fight. He says he can knock out David, so let’s see if we can make it happen.”David Haye

When I meet Rooney, RVP and Giggsy, I’ll just be so starstruck

Wilfried Zaha

WILFRIED ZAHA finds himself in a weird world torn between Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

Speaking at length for the first time since completing a £15million January move to United, the new England star accepts his immediate priorities are with Palace.
Automatic Championship promotion contenders at one stage, the Eagles are without a win in seven but head to Blackburn on Saturday looking to cement a place in the play-offs.
Yet while admitting the dream is to ensure that Palace earn themselves a place back in the top tier, Zaha accepts it is difficult to look beyond the new champions and Old Trafford, the place he will soon call home.
In the South London pad he currently rents with one of his five brothers, Zaha struggled to hide his enthusiasm ahead of his big move.
He said: “I am just anxious and excited. I cannot wait. It will be something different. When I walk into that dressing room at United, I do not know what I will feel. I will keep my head down as I am there to play football.
“But I have to admit I will be a bit starstruck. Van Persie and Giggs will be in there — wow. Rooney will be in there — amazing. How can I not be looking forward to this?
“I have to be patient. I do not expect to walk in and play week-in week-out. Once I get the chance I will take it.
“Moving to Manchester will be something I have to get used as I have lived in the south of England since I was four.
“I will come down to see my family so I do not think my accent will change!
“At the moment, though, the priority is Crystal Palace.
“I can only assure everyone this is the case. I’ve had a little dip in my performance since I signed for United, I will not deny that. But I have to get back to what I do well.
“People are saying it is the speculation of going to United which saw me struggle. But Robin van Persie went 10 games without scoring but it was one of those things. He was still doing his best and playing a part. Equally, I am desperate to get Palace up.”
Ivory Coast-born Zaha is a confident 20-year-old whose honesty and determination can be incorrectly interpreted as arrogance.
Yet it seems the player with eight siblings will never forget his roots.
He said: “It is difficult to get your head around how quickly this has all happened. Sometimes, I sit here in this very room with my brother Kel and we talk to each other in amazement. How has this happened all so quickly?
“All I can do is keep my head down. I have to try to cope with this success, while doing my best for Palace until the end of the season.
“Back in August the goal was to have a good season. I never thought I’d end the season a Manchester United player.
“Then things started to happen with Palace. While having a meal in November to celebrate my birthday, I got the call-up to the England seniors. I was thinking ‘this is crazy’.
“I was part of the squad which played in Sweden. The England team all said ‘hello’ to me.
“Steven Gerrard came up to me and gave me some advice. He settled me down which was very nice of him as I was a bag of nerves.
“During that England trip, I spoke to Danny Welbeck and he seemed really nice, so maybe going to Manchester for the first time will be a bit easier. Wayne Rooney was not around for that game.
“Then in January, the approach came from United. I spoke to Sir Alex and he was in London with Sir Bobby Charlton.
“They were staying at a hotel in London while the United squad had already gone to Qatar.
“When I first met him, I was thinking it was crazy that Sir Alex was telling me he had been watching me for many years.
“I spoke to my family and knew it was the best thing to go up there and sign.
“The last thing Sir Alex said was to keep working hard and that is what I intend to do.
“Most people have wished me good luck. At the end of one game a ref said ‘good game, Mr United!’”
Yet Zaha knows he will soon live in a goldfish bowl. One which will see every move scrutinised.
He was recently seen pictured out in a T-shirt which read ‘Dope Chef’. Zaha revealed: “Dope is slang for good. Now I think about it I understand why some people may think it means something else. I have no problem in getting rid of the top. I got it sent.”
Yet despite the prospect of playing Champions League football next term, Zaha accepts he needs to put in some more graft for the team he has been with since he was a kid.
He added: “I have gone through the lows with Palace.
“There was a rough patch when I wondered whether there would be a Palace. This club means a lot to me.
“So to be part of the team which gets them to the Premier League would be good.
“And to play against them at Old Trafford would be something.
“I am doing my best. Let’s hope we can get into the play-offs and make the dream come true.”
Either way, though, Zaha’s dreams will soon come true.

Adios amigos

Luis Suarez

TEN Games — we won’t argue with that.

Though, of course, if anyone else had bitten someone in the course of their work they would have been fired on the spot.
So where do Liverpool and Luis Suarez go from here?
Well, the Uruguayan is not as dumb as he looks or acts.
He’s a streetwise urchin who will use any situation to his advantage.
People within the club know that and would not be surprised if he got the hell out of it.
Just as he did after originally sinking his teeth into Otman Bakkal’s neck when with Ajax... to Liverpool’s great advantage.
Now history could well repeat itself, since a move is certainly his best option.
For a start — and this would have still been the case had the incident with Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic at Anfield on Sunday never taken place — the 26-year-old knows he is wasting the best years of his career at Anfield.
He is far too good for a club that looks as far away from regaining the glory years as ever.
Sure, they won the League Cup last season — but that only brackets them with Birmingham and Swansea.
In the league, they are little more than an irrelevance. They aren’t even top dog on Merseyside.
What is damaging Suarez more than anything is his, and Liverpool’s, absence from the Champions League.
This must be a monumental blow to the status of a player who, after his 30 goals for Liverpool this season, is regarded in some circles as the third-best footballer in the world behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
All season long he must have been making covetous glances towards Manchester, London and the Continent when Champions League time came round.
Instead, he has to survive on an insipid diet of bread-and-water trips to places like Southampton, Reading, Wigan, Norwich, Stoke and QPR.
Doesn’t exactly get the juices flowing when you compare it with the Allianz, Bernabeu and Nou Camp.
This is just one reason why he must leave Anfield and take advantage of the huge interest in him from Europe’s top clubs.
Barcelona certainly look as if they could do with his, er, bite up front.
Another reason for him not hanging around is his pariah-like status in this country.
Ridiculed everywhere, Suarez finds himself ranked somewhere between Hannibal Lecter and Dracula in the public perception. Yes, there is an amusing side to it all because of its sheer outrageousness. But the bottom line remains one of utmost gravity.
Can you imagine the reception he will get away from home? Can you imagine what it will be like next season at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge? Upton Park and Stoke’s Britannia Stadium should be fun as well.
Yes, Suarez has bought it all on himself. But does he really feel like baring his soul and his back for a public flogging?
Is he so contrite he is ready for the stocks and ducking-stool? You very much doubt it. Suarez says he never reads newspapers — well, he should now. Because the front-page headlines will give him every excuse he needs for the taxi to John Lennon Airport.
As his fellow countryman Gus Poyet said this week: “Do you want him in England? Yes or no?
“If everybody is against him, he will leave. If it was down to me, I would take him somewhere else — to any other country.”
Even without this latest battery of negative publicity, it was always debatable whether he would remain at Anfield. It was a forest fire of conjecture, with Suarez himself fanning the flames.
One minute he said he was going, the next he was staying. One day, Bayern Munich were in for him, the next it was Manchester City. And Barcelona and Real Madrid the day after that. Yes, any club that does sign him will have to wait until October before he is free of suspension.
Then, again, Liverpool waited until February 2 in the 2010-11 season before Suarez made his first appearance after signing him for £24million from Ajax in the January transfer window.
Obviously, Suarez comes out of all of this pretty poorly. But then so do Liverpool. Their reasons for contesting the FA’s claim that a three-match ban was not enough were risible.
That the whole affair had been mitigated by the player’s public apology? So f****** what?
And that Suarez had agreed to work on his anger management with Liverpool’s resident psychiatrist Steve Peters.
Which begs one enormous question — why the hell wasn’t Peters used before?
No, Liverpool have once again been exposed as totally out of touch with the modern world.
OK, they might have emerged from their Seventies-style response to Suarez’s racial abuse of Patrice Evra but they still appear stuck in the Eighties.
Why on earth they failed to seize the initiative and assumed some sort of moral high ground by at least banning him until the end of the season beggars belief.
So, now what?
If, as I said, Suarez and his agents have their wits about them, they will issue a two-word statement...
Adios, amigos.

Luis Kopped too harsh a ban

NOT IMPRESSED ... Brendan Rodgers

BRENDAN RODGERS believes the FA have punished the man, not the incident, by banning Luis Suarez for 10 games.

The Liverpool boss claims right punishment for the Uruguayan was a 12-match ban — with half of those suspended — after he was caught biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.
Suarez and Co have until midday tomorrow to appeal against the severity of the punishment, which will see the frontman out of domestic action until September at present.
But what rankles with Rodgers is that previous incidents of a similar nature have resulted in lesser sanctions from the FA.
He said: “It is the severity of the ban that has hurt most.
“That is something we are bitterly disappointed with — not so much the ban because everyone has seen it and Luis was very open and honest to know it was wrong.
Video:

The man, not the incident, has been punished

BRENDAN RODGERS says 10-game ban for Luis Suarez gave no scope for rehabilitation of the striker
“You can only compare it with simlar incidents and over the course of the last few years there have been two incidents where this has happened, both in 2006.
“One player received no ban and continued to be chosen by the FA as part of the England squad.
“And the second player received a five-game ban.
“So you can imagine that when Luis Suarez receives a 10-game ban it’s very difficult for us to understand.
“And even more so for Luis — this is a guy who has genuinely tried to curb his behaviour and his natual instints.”

The Dor is closed

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI has been told to stay at Borussia Dortmund next season.

The Polish striker, 24, demolished Real Madrid with a four-goal supershow in last night’s Champions League semi-final first leg.
And he is in demand with Manchester United one of the clubs who have been heavily linked with a move for him.
Lewandowski is out of contract next summer and has yet to commit to a new deal.
Dortmund have already lost star midfielder Mario Gotze to German rivals Bayern Munich this week after he triggered his own release clause.
But boss Jurgen Klopp said: “I don’t get the feeling Robert is on the run. We’ll just have to see what happens.”
Lewandowski refused to discuss his future after thrashing Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid.
But Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke outlined the club’s determination to keep him for another 12 months.
Watzke said: “Our wish is explicit that he stays here.
“We will even do without receiving a transfer fee for him — that doesn’t interest us in the slightest.
“Robert’s contract runs until 2014 and, unlike Mario Gotze, there is no get-out clause.”
Klopp believes Poland international Lewandowski last night wrote his name into Dortmund folklore.
He added: “Whenever I walk through the club’s museum, I always see the same old videos.
“Maybe now Robert’s four goals will find a place in there but for that to happen, we have got to build on this in the second leg.”
Despite holding a handsome first-leg lead, Klopp insists his side will not sit back in next week’s return at the Bernabeu.
The highly-rated coach said: “We are not a team who can simply defend a result. We always want to attack.
“I brought Sebastian Kehl and Kevin Grosskreutz on tonight to strengthen us defensively.
“The first thing they did was in the Real Madrid penalty area. I think that says it all.
“We have played an extraordinary game against a fantastic team but nothing has been decided yet.
“But even if we get knocked out, nobody can take this night away from us.”

Robert Lewandowski celebrates against Real Madrid

Blue Jose’s Falcao bid

Jose Mourinho

JOSE MOURINHO wants to take £53million Atletico Madrid superstar Radamel Falcao with him to Chelsea this summer.

As exclusively revealed in SunSport, the Real Madrid boss is desperate to return to his old job at Stamford Bridge.
And now we can reveal Mourinho has chosen Colombian ace Falcao to join his second coming.
Falcao has a £53m buy-out clause and the Blues will take advantage of the ‘non-aggression pact’ that exists between Atletico and Real Madrid to swoop for the hitman.
Mourinho is a huge admirer of Falcao and, if he thrashes out a deal with Blues owner Roman Abramovich, he will be given the cash to make Chelsea champions again.
The Special One’s return to the Bridge has gone through many twists.
But the two sides are reaching common ground on his wages and transfer targets.
Agent Jorge Mendes represents both Falcao and Mourinho — and that should smooth out a deal, provided the Special One’s return is confirmed at the end of the season.

They’ve got it in for Suarez

STAND BY YOUR MAN ... Pepe Reina has slammed Luis Suarez ban

PEPE REINA has hit out at the FA — claiming they have got it in for Luis Suarez.

The Liverpool striker is considering quitting English football after being hit with a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.
His club are waiting for the detailed written report from the FA before deciding whether to appeal against the punishment.
It is not the first time the Uruguayan has sunk his teeth into an opponent, having served a seven-match ban for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal in 2010 before his move from Ajax to Anfield
Reina believes his team-mate, who was hit with an eight-match ban last year for racially abusing Patrice Evra, is being targeted by the English governing body.
He said: “I consider myself a friend of Luis. He is being treated differently.
"I don’t know if it’s because he’s Uruguayan or because he’s had a previous episode like this.
“He knows full well that what he did was wrong but a 10-game ban seems to me absurd, out of proportion and unfair.
“It seems that the people making the decisions have got it in for Luis a little bit. That’s the way I see it.
“I am not justifying what he did but the punishment is very disproportionate.
“He knows he was in the wrong, he knows he has made a mistake but the treatment is completely out of place.
“Those who know Luis know that he is the complete opposite off the pitch, he is a magnificent person and great team-mate.
“But because of the way he plays, he is aggressive and very competitive, he plays like a street player and sometimes the way he is gets him into trouble.”
GNAW VERY CLEVER ... Luis Suarez sinks his teeth into Branislav Ivanovic
GNAW VERY CLEVER ... Luis Suarez sinks his teeth into Branislav Ivanovic
Asked if he felt there was xenophobia in England, Reina said: “There is hypocrisy, I don’t know if it’s so much xenophobia, but a different yardstick is used.
“Some players are treated differently to others.”
The ban, pending any successful appeal, means Suarez will not be available for Liverpool until September.
And Reina admits the striker would have no shortage of suitors if he did decide to quit the Premier League.
He added: "Right now he is a Liverpool player.
“He is having a bad time of it and so is his family. He is certainly good enough to fit into any team in the world.”

Rossi turns NASCAR star

IF ever you needed proof that Valentino Rossi is a motorsport genius, check this out...

After last weekend’s MotoGP race in Austin, the seven-time bike champ travelled across the US to have a go in a NASCAR Toyota at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s oval track.
And he was soon lapping at an average of 185mph!
“The Doctor” was in the car American hero Kyle Busch drives in NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series.
And his speed would have got him comfortably into the top half of a regular Nationwide field.
An impressed Busch said: “He started out a little slow, which is fine, but every lap he picked it up a lot.
“He got to where he was running some competitive lap speeds – times that would put him in the top 15 in Nationwide Series practice.
“That’s pretty good for a guy in his first start, who is just coming over and getting used to things and someone who is used to driving on two wheels.”
Rossi said he enjoyed the experience, even though he found it strange at first because NASCAR cars are set up for banked bends, meaning they crab slightly in a straight line unless corrected.
He said: “It was exciting, with high speed and a great feeling in the corners.
“On the banking you have a lot of grip so you are glued on the racetrack.
“At the beginning it was a bit strange because it’s difficult to go straight.
“But after some laps I had a lot of confidence and I was able to go faster and faster and faster.”Valentino Rossi

Lew can forget it, Vet

LEWIS HAMILTON has told Sebastian Vettel to forget about strolling to his fourth world title.

The three-time world champ racked up his second win of the season last Sunday in Bahrain to open up a 10-point lead at the top of the drivers’ championship.
But Mercedes ace Hamilton says it is too early to throw in the towel and is delighted with his start to the campaign, as he is just 27 points behind the German.
He said: “Seb always seems to win in Bahrain, so that was no real surprise for us.
“I don’t think it will be the same for Seb in all the races plus Red Bull have seemed to struggle in some qualifying sessions.
“The Bahrain GP could turn out to be one of the worst grands prix for us because we had a lot of problems with the car.
“We were on the back foot all weekend, so to come away with a fifth place when I started in ninth, was really pleasing.
“I turned a negative into a positive and now had two thirds and two fifths. When I was joining a new team, I thought it would be a lot worse than that.”
Hamilton also praised his former McLaren boss, Martin Whitmarsh, for his handling of the battle between Jenson Button and Sergio Perez.
The team-mates clashed on two occasions during the race, with Button giving his new colleague a dressing down over the team’s radio.
And while Button and Perez have now resolved their rift, Hamilton says it was good to see them being allowed to be competitive with each other.
He added: “They had a good battle. That’s the good thing about Martin, he allows his drivers to race.
“That’s what he has always done from the time that I was there. He doesn’t change in that respect.
“As long as we are all racing together, effectively and with respect for one another, it’s not a concern for me.
“We’re there to race, we just have to remember what is best for our teams and take care that we don’t take each other out.”
Meanwhile, Hamilton’s Mercedes team are believed to be in talks with former F1 driver Robert Kubica about helping them develop their simulator.
The computer set-up is designed to replicate the movements and performance of the team’s race car.
However, Hamilton has already revealed that Mercedes’ version was not a patch on that he used at McLaren.
Kubica, 28, is eyeing a return to F1 after severing his arm in a horrific rally accident in 2011.LEW CAN DO IT ... Hamilton is not throwing in the towel for the title yet

United’s new Lew chance

Robert Lewandowski

MANCHESTER UNITED have the green light to go after striker Robert Lewandowski — thanks to Mario Goetze.

Alex Ferguson is a long-time fan of Borussia Dortmund striker Lewandowski, but admitted last week he feared Bayern Munich would land him.
But yesterday the Bundesliga champs wrapped up a shock £31.5million move for his team-mate Goetze.
And this is likely to scupper Lewandowski’s chances — even though he has agreed personal terms with Bayern.
Furious Dortmund will try to block the Poland hotshot’s move or make him see out his contract and let him go for nothing next summer.
However, an £18m bid from Fergie would be hard to refuse.
The Scot tried to land him last summer but signed Robin van Persie instead.
Asked about his interest in Lewandowski, 24, last week, Fergie said: “Big signings are normally forwards, but it’s complicated enough with the ones I’ve got.”

Essien: All I want to do is play football

Michael Essien

MICHAEL ESSIEN has told Chelsea: All I want to do is play.

The powerhouse midfielder was surprisingly shipped out on loan to Real Madrid in August after struggling to recapture his best form last season following a serious serious knee injury.
And Essien has proved to be an important part of Jose Mourinho’s star-studded squad by filling in wherever required — just as he often did during the Special One’s time in charge at Stamford Bridge.
He said: “It’s been good, I can’t complain. I’m happy and have enjoyed the football.
“I’ve played a lot at right-back and I’ve enjoyed playing.”

Essien, 30, will return to the Bridge this summer knowing he faces an uncertain future with the Blues looking for a successor to unpopular interim manager Rafa Benitez.
But should Mourinho follow him back from Spain, the Ghanaian is likely to return to the first-team mix next term.
And that would suit Essien down to the ground. He added: “It doesn’t matter what position, it is just nice to be on the pitch.”

Hodgson: Man Utd are a Brit special

Roy Hodgson

ROY HODGSON hailed Manchester United’s strong English spine as a ‘major bonus’ for the national team.

Alex Ferguson’s side wrapped up the league with four games to spare on Monday night.
Three Lions stars Wayne Rooney, Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck, Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley have all been crucial figures this season.
England boss Hodgson said: “It’s very nice to see a lot of very good English players are coming through thanks to their incredible academy system.
“They are going to be very important for me. That is, of course, a major bonus.
“When I go to see United play, there’s a good chance I’ll see a number of English players, which unfortunately isn’t always the case.”
