Button makes his points

TEAM EFFORT ... Sergio Perez

JENSON BUTTON has called on his McLaren team-mate Sergio Perez to start delivering the points.

Perez has only had one top-10 finish in the three races this season and his own boss has told him to toughen up after last weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix.
And now Button wants the Mexican, 23, who replaced Lewis Hamilton in the winter, to get in on the scoring act.
He said: “A guy who races for a top team like McLaren has more pressure on his shoulders. Checo knows that.
“If we had a car that was actually capable of winning races, it would put even more pressure us.
“When you’re in the middle of the pack it’s tough. You can make one mistake and it costs you three places.
“It’s not an easy position to be in but you’ve got to make the best of it.”
Button’s fifth place in China leaves him 40 points behind Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ championship after this season’s three opening races.
But despite being so far adrift, the Brit is refusing to rule out his chances of winning his second F1 world crown.
However, he admits there will need to be some drastic improvements with his McLaren, which will not be ready in time for this Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix.
He added: “I’m not ruling out anything but we’re losing a lot of points, which isn’t great.
“It’s difficult at the moment. We’re definitely not where we needed to be at this point.
“The team are working hard to bring these new parts but it was not enough and we are not as positive as we thought we would be.
“We’re still not quick enough. There’s a lot more we need to do to be fighting at the front.
“It needs to be a good step forward in Barcelona, not massive, just in the right direction.
“I know what it is going to be coming for Barcelona and, if it gives us a few tenths, great, but I don’t think it is going to give us nine tenths.
“As long as it does what it’s supposed to, then we can start developing with that package.”
